Abstract

898,923. Machine tool details. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 6, 1961 [April 8, 1960], No. 12534/60. Class 83 (3). [Also in Groups XXIX, XXXI and XXXIV] An hydraulic drive arrangement for a member 11, Fig. 2, such as the tool carrier of a machine tool, supported for sliding motion on a supporting member 12 comprises a liquid chamber 15 which is formed between the adjacent bearing surfaces of the members 11, 12 and is of small dimension in a direction normal to the bearing surfaces so that liquid fed to the chamber 15 passes through it in the form of a thin layer and driving movement is imparted to the member 11 by the force exerted by the liquid due to its viscosity and skin friction drag upon the walls of the chamber. The member 11 may be formed with two chambers 15, 16 and liquid is supplied from a pump 20 to chamber 15 to move the member in the direction of arrow A or to chamber 16 to move the member in the direction of arrow B. Valves may be provided at the inlets or outlets of the chamber to control the movement of the member. In another embodiment, the chamber 24, Fig. 3, extends substantially the whole length of the member 21 and the supply from the pump 28 is directed to one end or the other of the chamber to effect movement of the member 21, which may be formed with chambers on opposite sides of the supporting member 21 to prevent separation of the surfaces. In a further embodiment for rotating a shaft 51, Fig. 5, the chamber 53 is formed in a housing 52 and fluid is supplied from a pump 57 to one end or the other of the chamber to rotate the shaft in one direction or the other. In a similar arrangement, a wheel 61, Fig. 6, such as a vehicle wheel, is supported on a stub shaft 62 and fluid supplied from a pump 67 to the chamber 63 through a passage 65 or 66 rotates the wheel in one direction or the other. Further passages 68, 69, 70 are connected by a passage 71 to atmosphere or suitable control means to relieve pressure at a bearing area 64 so that the wheel is supported on the liquid as in the ease of a hydrostatic bearing.
