Abstract

898,878. Respiratory appliances. CHIRANA PRAHA, NARODNI PODNIK, and MICHALEK, J. Oct. 12, 1959 [Oct. 15, 1958], No. 34437/59. Class 81 (2). An ether evaporator has a device 6 adapted to drip ether on to a moderately sloped conical surface 5 defining the bottom of a shallow chamber 5a to spray drops of ether and cause the ether to flow down the surface 5 counter to a gas or mixture of gases passing at 9 into the chamber through a restricted aperture 10 and mixing with ether vapour before leaving the chamber at 16 through a pipe 11 and valve 12 to be supplied to the patient. As shown, Fig. 1, exhaled breath in a closed circuit system passes through a valve 1 and cock 2 to a carbon dioxideabsorber 3 and thence to a chamber 4 where its heat is passed to the underside of the surface 5. The purified gas passes through a pipe 7, the cock 2 and pipe 8, with the optional addition of oxygen or a gaseous anaesthetic from a pipe 13, to the chamber 5a and thence, enriched with ether vapour, to the patient. When operated in an open system, the cock 2 is adjusted to allow air entering the valve 1 from atmosphere to pass directly to the pipe 8. A bellows 14 enables the apparatus to be used in artificial respiration. The evaporator is preferably made of copper, aluminium or other sheet material of good thermal conductivity and a channel 15 around the upper part of the evaporator may be filled with warm water.
