Abstract

817,980. Anaesthetic apparatus. BROOKE, R. March 6, 1957 [March 9, 1956], No. 7438/57. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] In apparatus for administering anaesthetics &c. and including a breathing chamber 10, Fig. 1, a soda lime container 11, inhaling and exhaliing tubes 14, 13 respectively, and oxygen and ether vessels 19, 18 connected by a tube 20 to a valve unit 17 attached to a face mask 15, the valve unit comprises upper and lower sections 21, 22, Fig. 3, separated by a ported plate 23. The upper section comprises parallel channels 24, 25, the inhaling tube 14 and the tube 20 being connected to the channel 25 which communicates through a pair of ports 36, controlled by downwardly-opening rubber disc valves 43, with a small dead-air chamber 48, Fig. 5, of, e.g., 10 c.cs. capacity, in the section 22. The exhaling tube 13 is connected to the channel 24 which communicates with the chamber 48 through a pair of ports 35 controlled by upwardly-opening rubber disc valves 42. The channel 24 is fitted with an outlet valve comprising a closure disc 65, Fig. 7, and adjusting screw 64 interconnected by a loading spring 66 and enclosed in a housing 61 adapted to be screwed into a boss on the channel. By means of an adapter, the valve unit may be attached to an endotracheal tube after the patient has been put to sleep by use of the mask. In a modified apparatus for use with infants, the passages 24, 25 have only a single valve and the dead-air space is reduced to 5 c.cs.
