Tobacco lengths cut from a tobacco stream by a knife 62, which regards the stream to form spaces into which mouthpieces are inserted, are accelerated by a reciprocating arm 113 which engages the trailing end of each tobacco length, the mouthpieces being directed into the spaces endwise on and at an angle to the stream. The tobacco stream 61, Fig. 1, passes beneath a steel compressing band 52 driven by a wheel 49 the speed of which is cyclically varied by a camoperated idler wheel 40, Fig. 4, which varies the slack in one side of a chain drive 36 for a shaft 37 driving the wheel 49. Multi-length mouthpieces are delivered from a hopper 9 into a grooved drum 154, Fig. 1, on which they are cut into double-length mouthpieces which are delivered in succession by a stepped guide 160 into a delivery shoot 162 leading to an arcuate channel 105 through which the mouthpieces are driven by a rotating finger 108 for insertion at an angle, Fig. 8, into the spaces in the tobacco stream. The hopper 9 and shoot 162 are pivotally mounted by a plate 142 on the top of the casing 10 containing the driving mechanism. The knife 62 is given a horizontal motion by a face cam 67, Fig. 4, actuating levers 72 connected to the knife carrier 76 and a vertical motion by a crankpin 79, engaging in a slot 78 in the carrier 76, and driven through a chain drive 85 at varying angular velocity by an eccentrically mounted sprocket 84 on a shaft 24, a cam disc 91 on which also actuates the knife carrier through a lever 93 and link 95 connected to the bottom of levers 72. The accelerating member 113, Fig. 1, is moved through a substantially rectangular path by a parallelogram-type linkage 123, 129, 126, 127, the upper member 123 being pivoted and actuated by a rotating cam 125 whilst the lower member 129 is connected by links 135, 134, to a crank pin 133 on the cam disc.
