898,569. Stuffing-box substitutes. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. April 5, 1960 [April 10, 1959], No. 12241/59. Class 122 (5). A grit-excluding arrangement for an hydraulic pit-prop or other piston and cylinder device comprises a scraper ring 28 axially located in the cylinder 10 and formed of flat resilient metal strip helically coiled around the ram 11. The free inner diameter of the scraper ring is less than the external diameter of the ram so that the inner edge of the strip, which is of hardened steel, bears resiliently against the ram. The scraper ring has two coils and is cranked at 33 so that the coils lie flat on each other. The ram 11 slides in a sleeve 12 welded to the cylinder 10 and a wiper ring 19 of elastomeric material is retained in a recess 18 in the sleeve 12 by a two-part ring 23 having tongues 25 welded at 26 to the sleeve and projecting through holes 22 in a ring 14 also welded to the sleeve and forming an annular recess 16 in which the scraper ring is located with axial clearance between the edge 27 of the ring 23 and a flange 17 of the ring 14. Any dirt or moisture passing the scraper ring 28 and removed by the wiper ring 19 escapes through slots 29 in the ring 23 opposite the holes 22 in the ring 14. The flange 17 is cut back at 34 to enable a scraper ring to be inserted or removed.
