Abstract
A process for the manufacture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids from a mixture of para-and meta-diethyl benzenes consists in forming para- and meta-di-acetyl benzenes by oxidation of the said mixture in liquid phase using oxygen or a gas containing oxygen in the presence of an oxidation catalyst such as lead, cobalt or manganese stearate, at increased temperature to form the isomeric di-acetyl benzenes and then separating same into the para- and meta-di-acetyl benzenes and converting each isomer independently by a further oxidation process into terephthalic or isophthalic acid with oxygen in the presence of organic solvents and oxidation catalyst. The para-di-acetyl benzene crystallises from the meta-diacetyl benzene which is liquid and separation may be effected by a centrifugal or pressure filtration process. Aliphatic or aromatic aldehydes may be used as oxidation initiators. In the example industrial diethyl benzene is oxidised with oxygen at normal pressure at 110 DEG C.-130 DEG C. in the presence of cobalt stearate, mixed diacetyl benzenes are obtained by fractionating the products, cooled to about 10 DEG C. and separated by filtration into para- and meta-isomers which are then oxidised in the presence of acetic acid, cobalt and manganese acetates and benzaldehyde to tere- and isophthalic acids.
