Abstract

898,473. Carrying bulk cargo. SMIDTH & CO., A.S., F. L. Nov. 7, 1960 [Nov. 5, 1959], No. 37592/59. Class 113. [Also in Group XXX] A ship for the transport of cement or other pulverulent material has pairs of closed tanks 3, 4 and 5, each of which is mounted so as to be tiltable about an axis 6 by hydraulic jacks 11. The cement is loaded through openings 18 and unloaded through a discharge opening 14. The tanks are tiltable so as to give the ship a low C.G. during transit but also an inclined bottom to assist the unloading. Each tank is provided with an air-permeable false bottom 12 through which compressed air may be passed to fluidise the lower part of the load so that it flows readily to the outlet 14 under gravity. A further compressed-air connection (not shown) may be provided in the top of each tank to assist the discharge through the pipe 16. The cement may be removed from the discharge 14 by purely mechanical means.
