Abstract

898,122. Hydraulic apparatus ; valves. MARSHALSEA BROS. Ltd., and EDWARDS, C. W. Oct. 5,1960 [Oct. 15, 1959], No. 34977/59. Classes 69 (2) and 135. A valve arrangement for controlling fluid pressure apparatus comprises four lift valves 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, Fig. 9, with their axes parallel and each comprising a valve head 13, Figs. 10 and 13, urged by a spring 18 towards a seat 10 which is of smaller diameter than a plunger guide 17 but of larger diameter than a plunger guide 16. Chambers 12 of the valves 8a, 8b are connected with an inlet duct 29 and the corresponding chambers of the valves 8c, 8d are connected with an exhaust duct 30. A chamber 11 of the valve 8a is connected by a transfer duct 31 with the chamber 11 of the valve 8c which last chamber is also connected with a feed and return duct 33 which can be connected to a singlestroke motor. The valves 8b, 8d are similarly interconnected by a transfer duct 32 and connect with a second feed and return duct 34. Each valve has a lever 19 to be engaged by an operating lever 1, Fig. 14, which is movable about axes 2, 6. Movement of the lever 1 about its axis 6 selects the valves that will be operated by movement about the axis 2. Thus, when the lever is to one side of a midposition about the axis 6 either the valve 8a or the valve 8c will be operated depending upon the direction of movement about the axis 2, whilst when it is to the other side of the midposition the valves 8b, 8d are operable. When in the mid-position the lever operates the valves 8a, 8b together or 8c, 8d together. A rotary disc valve 60 is also operable through a coupling 61 by rotation of the lever 1 about the axis 6. It has supply and exhaust connections 66, 77 and connections 72, 73 which may lead to the opposite ends of a double-acting fluid motor. Only when the lever 1 is moved about the axis 6 beyond the points at which the valves 8a ... 8d are individually operable does it bring the connections 72, 73 into communication with the supply and exhaust connections. A relief valve comprising a closure member 48, Fig. 13, coacting with a seat 47 on the end of a tube 45 and loaded by a spring 51 acting through a member 49 between which and the tube 45 is a linear ball bearing 53 may be associated with each pair 8a, 8c and 8b, 8d of valves for relieving pressure in the chambers 11.
