An electrically operated hammer comprises a solenoid, a capacitor, rotray contact means for connecting the capacitor to a direct-current supply and across the solenoid alternately, the rotary contact means being mounted on a common shaft and a conducting body movable with respect to, and interacting with the field of, the solenoid, rigidly connected to the working tool. As shown a body 1 having a handle 2 is provided with a solenoid 3 which, when energized, reacts with a copper disc 4 fixed in a piston 5 carrying a working tool. A pair of rotary switches 8, 10, mounted on a common shaft, are arranged first to charge a capacitor 9 and then to discharge it through the solenoid, causing repulsion of the copper disc and the piston. The return of the piston to its original position is produced by pressure applied to the tool by the operator.
