789,589. Angular bending. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 5, 1956 [Sept. 6, 1955], No. 27176/56. Class 83 (4). A portable power-operated bending tool comprises a power-actuated clamping means, a fixed abutment spaced from the clamping means and a power-driven abutment movable about the clamping means substantially in a plane containing the fixed abutment and the clamping means. Rectangular sectioned wire 4 is placed in the bending tool so that a roller 26, fixed in a tool housing 19, and a roller 12, carried by a sleeve 10, 11 mounted to rotate about a fixed block 1 in the housing 19, lie to one side of the wire and a rod 2, axially movable in the block 1 and carrying a clamp plate 3, lies to the other side of the wire. A button 22<SP>1</SP> of a three-way valve 22 is then depressed to allow compressed air through an inlet conduit 24 to the lower end of a cylinder 6, in which is movable a piston 5 secured to the rod 2, and to allow compressed air through a conduit 25 to a motor, e.g. an airdriven vane type turbine motor, in a housing 20 mounted on the housing 19. Thus simultaneously the clamp-plate 3 moves up to clamp the wire 4 against the block 1 and the sleeve 10 is rotated by the motor, through gearing, to move the roller 12 about the rod 2 to bend the wire therearound. To remove the bent wire, the roller 12 is backed off therefrom by operating control means 21 to reverse the motor and the button 221 is released to allow a spring 7 on the rod 2 to disengage the plate 3 from the wire. The roller 12 and clamp-plate 3 may be driven electrically or by steam.
