897,928. Automatic temperature-control systems. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC. & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. Aug. 5, 1958 [Aug. 8, 1957], No. 25060/58. Class 38 (4). In a two-step controller for controlling a condition of a medium, the voltage of a detector, which is representative of the condition, is combined in series with that of a condenser which is being charged when the controller is being operated at one level and is being discharged when the controller is operating at the other level, and the magnitude of the combined voltage determines the level at which the controller is operating. In Fig. 2, the temperature of a furnace 1 is automatically maintained at a desired value by including in series with the furnace A.C. heater (not shown) contacts S of an on-off relay 3 energized through an amplifier 2 from a thermocouple T responsive to furnace temperature. To reduce hunting, further contacts S 1 of relay 3 control the charging and discharging of a condenser C, a portion of the voltage across which is supplied as negative feedback to the input of amplifier 2. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), feedback from another resistance-capacity network having a longer time constant is also applied to the input of amplifier 2 under the control of further contacts of relay 3. Application to the automatic control of pressure and hydrogen ion concentration in liquids is referred to.
