Abstract
897,824. Valves. GENERAL CONTROLS CO. Jan. 25, 1960, No. 2710/60. Class 135. [Also in Group XXXII] A solenoid valve for controlling the supply of gas to a burner comprises a casing 11 having a flow passage 13, 14 controlled by a closure member 46 maintained closed by a spring 48, a solenoid device 18 mounted on the casing and having a plunger 32 carrying a stem 50 which is connected by a sealed rod 41 with the valve for moving the latter to the open position when the solenoid is energized, a casing 17 surrounding the solenoid and filled with a viscous liquid, and dash-pot means mounted in the casing 17 and engageable with the plunger stem, the dash-pot comprising a cylinder 57 and piston 58, restricted openings 66, 68 connecting the cylinder with the viscous liquid, the piston being operable by the stem to cause the liquid to flow through the openings and thereby retard the movement of the closure member towards fully open position. The piston 58 is provided with a passage 64 cooperating at one end with a closure member 62 loaded by a spring to the open position shown. The cylinder 57 is screw-threaded for axial adjustment in the casing in order to vary the gap between the closure member 62 and the ends of the stem 50. In operation, when the solenoid is energized, the plunger moves to the left as shown, and thereby opens the closure member 46 quickly due to the above-mentioned gap, but when the end of the stem contacts the closure member 62 and thereby closes the passage 64, continued movement of the valve is retarded due to the piston 58 forcing liquid through the restricted openings 66, 68 in the cylinder. Upon the solenoid being de-energized, the valve 46 closes and the piston 58 returns rapidly due to the fact that the spring 63 lifts the closure member 62 off its seat, thereby permitting full flow of liquid back into the cylinder 57. In various modifications of the dash-pot a dial may be provided for indicating the various settings of the gap between the stem and the closure member 62 and different arrangements of ports in the cylinder or in the piston may be provided in order to vary the speed with which the valve moves to the fully open position. The dash-pot may be arranged at the opposite side of the solenoid so that the plunger then pulls open the closure member.
