Abstract

897,615. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping. KENT MFG. CORPORATION. March 11, 1960, No. 8740/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A crimping-machine for operating simultaneously on two electrical connector members comprises a base 10, a frame 12 on said base, a vertically reciprocable plunger 14 carrying crimping tools 24, 26, a housing mounted on said frame to surround and guide said plunger, means for feeding articles to be crimped around wire ends toward said plunger, two anvils 28, 30 on said base beneath said tools, said housing having openings 20, 22 above said anvils for the reception of said wire ends and a stop-plate 46 behind said openings to limit the distance of insertion of the wires therethrough, said stop-plate having vertically extending shoulders 50, 52 to limit the horizontal divergence of the wire ends thrust through said openings. A strip of connector members 32 is intermittently fed to a track member 40 on the machine so that two connector members are positioned on the anvils on each feeding stroke. The feeding is effected by a pawl 54 which has two teeth 56 and 58 so that when the plunger rises after a crimping operation the tooth 58 engages behind the second of the newly severed and crimped connections and pushes them out of the machine and the tooth 56 pushes against the second connector on the strip to locate two more connectors on the anvils. The pawl is pivoted to a disc 62 which is rocked about its axis to reciprocate the pawl by the plunger 14 through an arm 74 carrying a roller 72 which engages in a recess 76 in the disc. A spring-loaded drag shoe 80 engages the connecting-strip 34 of the connector members and the pressure exerted by the drag shoe can be relieved by a cam button 88. A resilient holddown member 90 is also provided to prevent buckling of the leading portion of the connecting-strip when the pawl is retracted. The plunger carries a blade which severs the necks 36, Fig. 6, of the leading two connector members after the crimping operation and also the end portion of the strip 34.
