897,493. Making electrical components; jointing by stamping; shearing. KENT MFG. CORPORATION. March 22, 1960, No. 10146/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A machine for crimping the wire-gripping portion 24 of a connector member 20 about a stranded wire laid thereon comprises a vertically-reciprocable plunger 36 carrying crimping and cutting tools in mutual face-to-face contact for operating simultaneously on said wire-gripping portion 24 and the wire laid thereon, said cutting tool including means operating to gather and centre the strands of said wire immediately before said wire gripping portion is crimped. The machine has a base 26 and an upright frame 28, the base being provided with a track 30 along which a strip of connector members are fed to the crimping station. A friction drag shoe 32 bears on the connector strip as it is fed step-by-step into the machine by a feed pawl 34 cam-operated by the machine plunger 36 which carries a bifurcated cut-off tool 72 and a crimping tool 74, Fig. 6. The bifurcated portion of the cut-off tool serves to collect together the end portions of the wire strands before they are trimmed by the knife edge 88 which also severs the leading connector member from the strip. A passageway 98 is provided between the anvil 90 and the track 30 through which severed portions of the connector member and wire fall into a receptacle (not shown). A crimped joint made by the machine is shown in Fig. 9.
