Abstract

897,556. Lavatory swabbers. ROBERTSON, W. Dec. 23, 1958 [Jan. 10, 1958], No. 41556/58. Class 61. A device for cleaning lavatory pans comprises a handle 1 and two outwardly-sprung plate-like jaws 10, each oriented with its plane faces transverse of the handle axis, situated at one end of the handle and so associated that the opposed edges of the jaws are urged towards one another under spring action to enable the narrow end of a substantially shuttlecock-shaped pad 16, formed by folding a disc of pliant material, to be sandwiched between the jaw edges and thereby secured; means carried by the handle operable by hand to move the jaws away from each other for release of the pad. A rod 11 with an external button 15 passes through through the handle 1, which is made in two parts 2, 3, and houses a spring 6 which is compressed between an internal flange 5 and a stop 11 on the rod 11. The front-end 4 of the handle has a wedge 12 to ensure correct opening and closing of the jaws 10 on a protrusion 9 around its periphery. The pad 16 is of superimposed discs of cellulosic material, preferably thick porous paper and may be treated with a water-soluble detergent or disinfectant.
