Abstract

The invention comprises 3-N1-acetylsulphanilamido-5-methyl-isoxazole and its preparation by reacting 3 - sulphanilamido - 5 - methyl - isoxazole or a metal salt thereof with acetic anhydride in an inert organic solvent such as acetone, benzene or pyridine, preferably at a temperature not above 90 DEG C. and more preferably not above 60 DEG C. At temperatures above 60 DEG C. the N4-acetyl compound is formed simultaneously and is removed by treatment with alkali. Specification 814,276 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations having anti-bacterial activity comprise 3-N1-acetylsulphanilamido - 5 - methyl - isoxazole (see Group IV (b)) suitably in the form of tablets, pills, powders or liquid preparations containing excipients and/or other sulpha drugs or antibiotics.
