Abstract
897,315. Filters. JUNG, H. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 4, I958], No. 30344/59. Class 46. Rows of filter candles K, Fig. 1, are located in a cylinder Z which has pipe connections to a head rotated by gearing (not shown). Sludge is introduced to the casing Z, through inlets along a trough 36a, and when the casing is full superatmosphere pressure is applied, cylinder Z is rotated and filtration begins. When a certain thickness of residue is attained, the sludge supply is cut off, the casing is drained and the residue washed and dried. Then the filter candles are subjected to internal liquid and gaseous pressure to remove the residue, which is discharged by the worm 36. As the candles reach the top of the casing each is cleaned by horizontal foaming liquid jets from a ring 32 which is reciprocated by a piston B. A supersonic device may also be provided. In Fig. 3 the candles are directed inwards and sludge stirrers 23 are provided. The cylinder Z is provided with apertures (not shown). The process steps are as before but here the residue is discharged by an axiallyarranged worm 36 in a trough 36a. Each candle consists of a ceramically-bound sintered inert non-metallic material and may be formed in two layers, that on the outside having finer pores; it may be surrounded by a spiral of wire which is sprayed with a hardening liquid e.g. to change the porosity for a different sludge. Each candle is screw-threaded or bayonet-fitted into its cap 1 and may be rendered non-porous in the vicinity of its cap.
