Abstract

897,194. Sorting letters; endless conveyers. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. Dec. 17, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 40748/58. Class 78 (1). Letters are diverted from a conveyer to one or more others by jets of air. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, letters resting on a conveyer belt 1a and prevented from falling off by side walls 4 either pass straight on a similar belt 1b or are deflected on to a similar belt 1c by a jet of air issuing from a nozzle 5. Air is supplied to the nozzle from a reservoir 8 through-a pipe 7 provided with a magnetic valve 6. Some of the letters have been marked with code sign in ink which fluoresces when irradiated with ultra-violet light from the lamp 9. The fluorescence excites the photo-electric cell 10 the pulse of which after amplification by 11 actuates the relay 12 which opens the valve 6 for a short time to release a blast of compressed air. In a modification the scanned code signal is stored and the valve actuated by a beam barrier 23 when the edge of the letter reaches the junction of the conveyers. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, letters in channel a are fed to the junction by pairs of pressure rollers 13, 13<SP>1</SP> and 14, 14<SP>1</SP> which preferably are covered with soft, plastic, resilient material. Rails 15, 15<SP>1</SP> guide the letters between the rollers. A jet of air from the nozzle 5 urges a letter to be diverted against a more rapidly moving roller 16 which accelerates it so that it passes to the gripping rollers 17, 17<SP>1</SP>. If the letter is to be conveyed further, a pair of belts 18, 18<SP>1</SP> is provided. Letters on which the blast of air is not directed are guided by resilient wires or strips 19 to the channel b. The channel consists of belts 22, 22<SP>1</SP> running round pairs of end rollers 20, 20<SP>1</SP> and 21, 21<SP>1</SP>. Another channel similar to channel c may be disposed on the opposite side of the channel b and the channel b may be arranged to deliver to a similar set of 3 channels. This arrangement may be repeated indefinitely.
