[Also in Divisions B6 and F4] A flat sheet or strip 20 is supported by air or other gas deflected towards opposing sides of the sheet by a plate 14 and restricted by guides 16 to discharge at the edges of the sheet.The guides 16 may have parts of different slope, and the deflector plate may be replaced by divergent nozzles. A strip may be transported by directing some of the air longitudinally of the strip. Sheets 200, Figs. 8 and 9, may be lifted from a conveyer belt 176 by the action of several streams of gas directed by deflectors 193, 192, 191 and guides 190 to be held against a belt 180 running over the central deflector 193. Two support devices 160, 170 are arranged between the runs of the belt 180, so that sheets lifted from the supply conveyer 176 by the action of the device 160 travel along with the belt 180 and may be dropped on a pile of sheets 201 by cutting off the air supply to the device 170. Sheets may be lifted from a pile and dropped on a conveyer.
