Abstract
A moving web, more particularly a web of paper that requires to be dried, is maintained at a small distance from a stationary surface by passing a fluid from an orifice in the surface against the web under such pressure that the web is drawn towards the surface to be spaced from it by a narrow constant gap. Whilst so spaced, the web may have physical properties, e.g. temperature or moisture content measured or controlled. Cool or warm air may be forced through the orifice and air at different temperatures may be caused to pass over the width of a web. Liquids or gases may be mixed with the air jets and it is stated that coatings for the web may be applied as mists of lacquers, plastics or like materials. Dyestuffs may also be carried in the air stream and by periodic or spatial variation in the amounts supplied patterned effects may be obtained.
