Abstract

897,084. Cleaning tubes. FERRANTI Ltd., and BRADFIELD, G. Oct. 27, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958], No. 39418/58. Class 99(2). [Also in Groups XIX and XXXV] A viscometer has an element 1 adapted for whole or partial immersion in a fluid, means 3, 6 for imparting torsional or longitudinal vibrations to the element 1, and means (not shown) for imparting additional or alternative vibrations to the element 1, these vibrations being of such an amplitude that any matter adhering to the surface of the element 1 is removed. The element 1 is formed as a nickel-alloy tube having a tubular intermediate portion 2 of magneto-strictive material. It is subjected to magnetic fields set up by a permanent magnet assembly 3 and the secondary windings 4, 5 of a transformer 6. The primary winding (not shown) of the transformer 6 is provided with a pulsed input thus causing the tubular member 1, 2 to vibrate at its resonant frequency in a torsional mode. In operation, the time taken for the amplitude of the vibrations to decrease from one predetermined value to another is a measure of the viscosity of the liquid in which it is immersed. In order to produce additional vibrations to remove matter from the surface of the member 1, an electronic oscillator generating a train of pulses of suitable amplitude and frequency is provided. The output of this oscillator is periodically applied to the primary winding of the transformer 6. In a second embodiment, a coaxial solenoid coil is provided around the portion 2 of the tubular member. The output of an oscillator whose frequency is the natural resonant longitudinal frequency of the member 1, 2 is applied to this coil, the input to the primary winding of the transformer 6 being disconnected, periodically. This is said to cause local cavitation and thus produce a greater scouring effect.
