896,963. Electrolytic cells. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 18, 1960 [March 26, 1959; June 3, 1959], Nos. 10601/59 and 18938/59. Class 41. An electrolytic cell, e.g. one employing a mercury cathode, has one or more elongate current distributers 3, 4 which traverse the cell and to which a titanium or similar metal or alloy electrode 2 or electrode sections are secured, the or each distributer comprising a sheath 3 of titanium or similar metal or alloy and a core 4 in electrical contact therewith of a metal, e.g. Cu or Al, having a lower electrical resistivity than titanium or the similar metal or alloy. Titanium or similar metal or alloy means Ti, Nb, Ta and Ti base alloys with Ta and/or Nb. The electrodes 2 comprise spaced horizontal mesh sections electroplated with Pt or Rh, and are welded to the distributers along two parallel edges, the distributers being welded to a cover 5 of titanium or similar metal or alloy and having their ends projecting therethrough. In a modification, U-shaped distributers of rectangular cross-section are employed, the arms projecting vertically through the cover. Specification 877,901 is referred to.
