Abstract
1355797 Bi-polar electrodes ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 4 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 23718/70 Heading C7B A bi-polar electrode e.g. for electrolysis of brine in the production of sodium chlorate, comprises a supporting member of a base metal, e.g. of Fe, Cu, Al, Zn, Ni or an alloy thereof, the surfaces of which are anodic in use being provided with a layer not more than 1/10 the thickness of the base metal of a passivatable metal, e.g. Ti, Nb, Zr, Ta or an alloy thereof, said layer being at least partially coated with a very thin non-protective layer of chemically resistant metal or semi-conductive material, e.g. a platinum metal, alloy or oxide thereof, or a mixture of such oxides with oxides of Pb, Mn, Co, Ti, Ta, Zr, Si or Fe (this layer may be porous). An interface layer, e.g. of copper, may be provided between the base metal and the passivatable metal. An electrolytic cell may contain the bi-polar electrodes stacked parallel transversely of the cell; or may comprise longitudinal electrode sheets extending through an insulating wall, the ends of the electrode forming opposite poles in the adjacent cell units (the anodic end being coated as above).
