896,834. Semi-conductor devices. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 14, 1958 [Nov. 18, 1957], No. 36719/58. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (b)] A variable resistor comprises a light source and photo - sensitive device structurally combined. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 the radiation sensitive body is a thin disc of sintered cadmium sulphide powder activated with copper in gallium and is provided on its upper side with two interdigitated comb-like aluminium electrodes. The sensitive device is mounted on plate 6 of resin-bonded paper in a glass envelope 4, sealed with resin 7. The glass housing and an incandescent lamp 11 with a flattened end are mounted in an aluminium tube 13 the ends of which are sealed with resin-bonded paper. The photo-cell may be one containing a PN junction and an additional series resistor may be mounted beneath member 6.
