Abstract

An electric storage battery diaphragm is made by impregnating a porous, chemically inert carrier having a large number of interconnected pores, with ethylenically unsaturated monomers which are then polymerized in situ to form an ion-exchange resin in continuous phase throughout the pores of the carrier. Specified carriers are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride, and asbestos. For alkaline batteries, such as Ag/Zn or Ni/Cd, the ion-exchange resin is cationic and may be a sulphonic acid resin or a carboxylic acid resin (in particular a methacrylic acid/divinyl benzene copolymer). For acid batteries, such as Pb/acid batteries, the ion-exchange resin is anionic and may be an amine resin (in particular a vinyl pyridine/divinyl benzene copolymer). For use as battery diaphragms the above resins are converted to the salt forms, e.g. cationic resin is treated with hot weak alkali and then with hot strong alkali (such as KOH).
