Abstract
A method of feeding powdered solid catalyst into a reactor comprises continuously feeding the catalyst at a controlled rate into a zone provided with a discharge opening communicating with the reactor and continuously feeding a liquid at an independently controlled rate into the zone, the liquid passing through said discharge opening and carrying catalyst therewith as a slurry of controlled solids content into the reactor, a body of said liquid being maintained in said zone and fresh liquid being supplied thereto at such a rate as to maintain the volume of liquid therein between predetermined limits. The invention also consists of an apparatus comprising said reactor, zone (a vessel) and discharge opening; means for continuously supplying at independent rates the catalyst and liquid, and means for maintaining within predetermined limits a head of liquid in the vessel. The catalyst may be introduced by way of a pipe below the liquid level; preferably within the pipe is a screw conveyer adapted to forward the catalyst through the pipe at a lower rate near the outlet than at the inlet so as to cause the catalyst to form a plug sealing the outlet against ingress of liquid. Specification 790,195 is referred to.ALSO:Polymerization of olefines, particularly ethylene, is effected in a solvent with solid catalyst (e.g. thermally activated chromia-silica-alumina) slurried therein, the catalyst being supplied by continuously feeding it at a controlled rate into a zone provided with a discharge opening communicating with the reactor and continuously feeding a liquid at an independently controlled rate into the zone, the liquid passing through said discharge opening and carrying catalyst therewith as a slurry of controlled solids content into the reactor, a body of said liquid being maintained in said zone and fresh liquid being supplied thereto at such a rate as to maintain the volume of liquid therein between predetermined limits; the contents of the reactor are withdrawn in a measure as olefine and fresh catalyst slurry are supplied thereto. Other monomers listed are propylene, 1- and 2- butene, -pentene, -hexene and -octene; 2-and 3-methyl-1-butene; isobutylene, 1-dodecene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, 2-methyl-2-butene, cyclohexene, 4-vinylcyclohexene, butadiene and isoprene; mixtures of these specified monomers, and unspecified methyl, ethyl or chloro-substituted conjugated diolefins. The usual hydrocarbon solvents are mentioned, cyclohexane being particularly preferred. Specification 790,195 is referred to.
