896,637. Pressure gauges; indicating-apparatus. GARRETT CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1958 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 32952/58. Classes 106 (2) and 106 (4). In apparatus for indicating the ratio of two forces, one of the forces and the difference of the forces are applied to predetermined spaced points 36, 70 of a main lever 16 which is balanced by automatically moving its fulcrum 20 along a portion of the lever which does not lie between the points 36, 70. Three bellows assemblies 11, 12, 13 are mounted coaxially, the first, 11, being bolted at 30, 32 to a frame 10 and bearing at knife edge 34 on an auxiliary lever 14, the second, 12, being bolted at 51 to the lever 14 and at 56 to another auxiliary lever 15, and the third 13 being welded to the lever 15 and bolted at 64, 66 to the frame 10. The bellows 13 are evacuated and the smaller and greater of the pressures are introduced into the spaces between the bellows 25, 54 and their housings 22, 50 which form the assemblies 11, 12, the levers 14, 15 are pivoted at 27, 72 and through flexure strips 36, 70 thus apply the pressure difference and the larger pressure to the lever 16, whose fulcrum 20 is moved by an electric follow-up system to restore the balance of the lever 16, the position of the fulcrum 20 then indicating the required ratio. The frame 10 is supported at three points in a collar 21 which serves to mount the apparatus without distorting the frame. Counterweights 35, 60 are provided on the auxiliary levers 14, 15 to reduce the effect of acceleration and the main lever 16 may be balanced as described in Specification 768,503. In another embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the three bellows assemblies are arranged in tandem with the line of their axes parallel to the main lever to which the forces are applied through bell-crank levers. The apparatus may be used as a Mach meter and would be particularly useful for high Mach numbers, it may also be used for determining the power developed in a gas-turbine power plant.
