575,008. Mechanical relay and follow - up devices. K.D.G. INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and EVERINGTON, G. D. Dec. 1, 1943, No. 20101. [Class 118 (ii)]. [Also in Group XIX] A required relationship between variables is measured by an instrument comprising a pivoted lever, means responsive to each of the variables to produce forces proportional thereto, means for applying these to the lever to produce turning moments thereon, external adjusting means to vary one of the moments to balance the lever, and means for measuring the adjustment made. In An instrument for use in aircraft, for indicating the " Mach " number and comprising a lever 10 pivoted at 11, a sylphon bellows 40 acts directly on the lever and a sylphon bellows 41 acts indirectly thereon through levers 47, 13 pivoted at 48, 14. When the balance is upset, one or other of the contacts 59, 60 is made to produce rotation of the motor 58 in the required direction to move lever 13 longitudinally to restore the balance. The corresponding " Mach " number is read on scale 37. The interiors of bellows 40, 41 are subjected to air stream pressure P and a vacuum respectively. The exterior of the bellows is subjected to static air pressure S. The variables are therefore P-S and S. The ratio P-S/S varies in accordance with a function of the "Mach " number M and is approximately proportional to M<2>. The length of the lever 13 equals the distance between the end of lever 47 and the pivot 11. If y is the distance between the ends of levers 47 and 13 and pivots 14 and 11 respectively, then P-S/S is proportional to ye. Adjustments of 13 are therefore proportional to M.
