Abstract
An abrasive composition comprises (a) an aluminium oxide abrasive, suitably unfused aluminium oxide of 300-325 mesh, (b) an inert fibrous granular medium, such as sawdust or cob meal, throughout which (a) is dispersed, and (c) a fat as a lubricant, e.g. tallow, lard or other vegetable or animal fat, which bonds (a) to (b), the proportions present being preferably 1-15 parts (a), 85-90 parts (b), and 6-14 parts of (c), all parts being by weight. The composition preferably also contains a mixture of candelilla and carnauba wax and stearic acid. A preferred composition is that obtained by heating a mixture comprising 55-70 parts tallow, 20-25 parts stearic acid, 5-15 parts candelilla wax, and 3-8 parts carnauba wax to 160 DEG -180 DEG F., mixing the required amount of the product with a solvent such as oleum spirits or kerosene to the consistency of a light oil and then adding first (b) then (a), and mixing until the solvent has evaporated. If preferred the stearic acid in this composition may be wholly replaced by a further equivalent amount of candelilla wax. Specification 821,992 is referred to.
