Abstract

895,988. Shaping clay-ware. SERVICE (ENGINEERS) Ltd., and JOHNSON, J. A. Aug. 22, 1958 [Aug. 24, 1957], No. 26779/57. Class 87(2). In a machine for moulding ceramic ware of the type comprising a porous mould on a rotatable support below a rotary shaping tool having a cone-shaped operative end face of very obtuse apical angle, a reduced pressure is applied below the mould during moulding. A thick disc of clay is placed on a porous plaster mould 12 which has a contoured upper surface 18 and rests on a rim 14 of a supporting head 10 leaving a space 16 between the mould 12 and the head 10 which is rotatably mounted on a shaft 4. Shaft 22 carries a cam 24 which cooperates with rod 26 to produce the required movement of the cone-shaped tool as described in Specification 765,097, and a further cam 44 arranged so that when the rotating tool contracts the clay to form a plate, &c., valve 34 is actuated to connect the bore 28 of the shaft 4 and thus space 16 to a pipe 40 connected to a vacuum pump. When the plate has been shaped, the cam 24 causes the tool to be withdrawn and cam 44 actuates valve 34 so that the bore 28 is either connected to atmospheric pressure or to a source of compressed air.
