Abstract

895,850. Electro-pneumatic brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. July 28, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 26301/59. Class 103 (1). Rail vehicle braking apparatus has a triple valve 14 controlling communication of the brake cylinder pipe either with the reservoir 17 or atmosphere, depending on the position of a pressure-sensitive element 25 separating two chambers 26, 27, a change-over valve 33 enabling communication between the chamber 26 and the brake cylinder or the pipe 11, and electromagnetically-operated valves 36, 37 for controlling communication of the chamber 27 with the reservoir 17 or with atmosphere. As shown, changeover valves 33 and 40 are set for electro-pneumatic operation, valves 36 and 37 being energized so that the chamber 27 is vented, this action in turn lowering a hollow stem 23 to vent the brake cylinder through pipe 24, and the brakes are released. The brakes are applied by de-energizing the valves 36 and 37 so that compressed air flows into the chamber 27 from the reservoir 17 to push up the element 25 so that a like pressure is created in the brake cylinder. The magnetic valves are controlled from train wires 12 and 13, a further train wire 43 being fitted with a low-pressure switch 42 as a safety device to ensure brake application should train pipe pressure fall. For straight pneumatic operation, the changeover cocks 33 and 40 are set to the positions shown in dotted lines.
