895,774. Controlling nuclear reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 7, 1959 [Jan. 10, 1958], No. 1002/58. Class 39(4). A neutron-absorbing fluid can be injected into a reactor if the safety control rods fail. Suitable fluids are the gases nitrogen, boron trifluoride, chlorine, boroethane, borobutane, trimethylboron, boron trichloride, dimethyl diborane, chlorine monoxide, krypton, xenon and the liquids carbon tetrachloride, diethyl cadmium, sulphur dichloride, sulphuryl chloride, trimethyl diborane, tetramethyl diborane, borazole. The drawing shows a gascooled graphite-moderated reactor with shut down rods 23 controlled via a relay 27 by various safety trips. If the rods 23 fail to drop, a relay 36 after a certain time releases the absorbing fluid from a tank 33 into the coolant circuit.
