Abstract

Artificial pumice is obtained by heating industrial slag up to its melting point, mixing in gas under pressure within a closed vessel, rapidly releasing the pressure followed by immediate rapid cooling of the slag. In a modification, instead of the gas being mixed in as such, a powder, e.g. kaolin, capable of evolving gas at the temperature of the molten slag is used. Blast furnace and boiler slags are specified, with carbon dioxide as the preferred gas. Rapid cooling and rapid pressure release are defined.
