Abstract

895,494. Open hearth furnaces. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 1869/60. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group XIII] Continuous regenerators are employed to preheat the combustion air supplied to an open hearth furnace, the air being heated in the regenerators by the hot gases exhausting from the furnace and being supplied at substantially constant temperature simultaneously to opposite sides of the furnace. In the form shown, hot combustion gases pass from the furnace chamber 18 through a centrally disposed duct 32 and then divide to flow in two parallel-connected streams through the heating gas zones of two rotary-matrix type thermal regenerators 15. Combustion air supplied by fans 16 flows through the air heating zones of the regenerators before flowing through ducts 12 to the furnace combustion chamber. Larger slag particles are removed from the combustion gases by a slag pocket provided in the duct 32 upstream of the regenerators (Fig. 2, not shown). Means may also be provided for injecting chemicals into the duct 32 to facilitate the handling of solids removed from the gas stream. Other particulate matter in the gases is removed by a precipitator 22 downstream of the regenerators.
