895,118. Gas pipe connections. BERGHOFER, H. Feb. 14, 1961, No. 5400/61. Class 99(1). A gas point and a coupler for a flexible gas pipe extension includes a rotatable connecting member 21 which simultaneously rotates a plug valve 2 in the gas point and a ball cage 5, the balls 6 being forced into engagement with cooperating holes 24 in the member for retention of the coupler in the socket of the gas point. As shown, the gas point comprises a body 1 formed with axial grooves 12 to receive the locking balls 6 in the cage 5 which is provided with axial slots 20 receiving axial extensions 4 of the plug valve 2. Between the valve and a spring 7 is a thrust ring 8 formed with lobes 9 engaging in the grooves 12 and circumferentially spaced, radial grooves 10, and an arrester ring 11 having recesses for reception of the extensions 4 and radial ridges 13. The coupler includes a connector 21 and a rotatable sleeve 22 formed with recesses 23 and holes 24; a spring wire clip 27 connects the relatively non-rotatable connector and a hand grip 26. In operation, the connector 21 is inserted into the socket of the gas point so that the recesses 23 in the sleeve 22 receive the extensions 4 of the plug 2, the holes 24 being located in alignment with the balls 6. Rotation of the grip 26 causes rotation of the plug valve 2 and the cage 5 so that the balls are forced out of the grooves 12 and into the holes 24. The ring 11 is also rotated so that the ridges 13 thereof are disengaged from the grooves 10 of the non-rotatable ring 8, which yields axially against the pressure of the spring 7, and after rotating through 30 degrees reengage a second set of grooves 36 in the ring 8, the plug in this position being still closed and further rotation to a total rotation of 120 degrees causes the grooves and ridges to engage in a position in which the plug is open.
