Abstract

Hydrogen is converted to the equilibrium energy slate in the temperature range 20 DEG K.-240 DEG K. by passing the hydrogen through a porous bed of ferric oxide gel particles which have been activated by heating to 110 DEG C.-140 DEG C. The ferric oxide gel may be prepared by precipitating from a solution of a ferric salt and a base, washing the precipitate, drying, grinding to the desired particle size, and heating to 110 DEG C. to 140 DEG C., preferably for 12-16 hours at a pressure of 1 min. Hg. or less, the vaccum being broken by pure hydrogen gas while the catalyst is still hot. Heat evolved or used by the interconversion is removed or supplied. A statement of prior art refers to the use of Cr2O3 on alumina as catalyst for the interconversion.
