Abstract
Hydrogen in equilibrium energy state in the range 20 DEG K to 200 DEG K. is produced by passage through a porous bed of ferric oxide gel particles as catalyst, which have been heated to not greater than 200 DEG C. and then between 140 DEG and 280 DEG C. The temperature of the mixture of ortho and para hydrogen may be lowered or raised before passage through ferric oxide according to whether the concentration of para hydrogen is being increased or decreased respectively, in the latter case the mixture is heated to replace heat removed by the endothermic reaction. The oxide catalyst is prepared by precipitation as a gel from aqueous ferric salt solution by a base, washing the precipitate with water to remove anions, drying e.g. at not greater than 200 DEG C., grinding e.g. to 20 mesh, and heating to activate e.g. at 140-280 DEG C. The gel may be used whilst still hot but may be heated to activate, in dry nitrogen, hydrogen or helium. Specification 894,819 is referred to.
