Abstract

894,796. X-ray goniometers. KHOL, F. Oct. 6, 1959, No. 33807/59. Class 98(1). A mechanical framework used in conjunction with an X-ray spectrometer automatically converts the measured diffraction angle into a direct reading of the lattice spacing (# and d in the Bragg equation). Fig. 1 shows an ordinary spectrometer arrangement in which M is the specimen, D the detector moving round M at radius r, and F the origin of radiation. Line OFM is called the "base line" z. The arm on which D is mounted is connected at K by a sliding joint to a rotatable arm m pivoted at O. K moves on a circle of radius OS and centre S. A straight line p is drawn parallel to the base line z and distant from it some fixed multiple (q) of the half wave-length (#/2) of the X-radiation being used. Arm m crosses line p at point P. The distance OP represents the lattice spacing d (multiplied by the same multiple q). Fig. 2 (not shown) is a modified arrangement suitable for the Seemann type of spectrometer. Specification 824,994 is referred to.
