Abstract

Unsaturated polyester resins are copolymerized with monomers containing a vinyl radical in the presence of an ester of beta-aminocrotonic acid. Complete copolymerization takes longer than with peroxide catalysts and gives a product with less internal stresses. Examples contrast the copolymerization of styrene and a maleic anhydride-diethylene glycol polyester, stabilized with hydroquinone using as catalyst beta-aminocrotonic acid ethyl ester; a mixture of 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl and di-t-butyl peroxides; cyclohexanone peroxide; methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and benzoyl peroxide. The copolymerization of styrene and a fumaric acid/diethylene glycol polyester filled with titanium white using beta-aminocrotonic acid octyl ester is also described.
