Abstract

1363148 Polymer coupling with unsaturated esters PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 3 Sept 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 41241/71 Heading C3P Alkali-metal terminated polymers are coupled by reaction with an unsaturated ester of the formula CH 2 = C(R)COOR<SP>1</SP> where R is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group and R<SP>1</SP> is an organic group as defined for R in amounts of 0À1 to 0À8 part by weight per 100 parts by weight of polymer. The polymers are conjugated diene or vinyl aromatic compound homo-, block or random copolymers or block or random copolymers of a conjugated diene and a vinyl aromatic compound with one another. A small amount of a deactivating material, e.g. water, alcohols or acids, may be added prior to, during, or after coupling to provide a proportion of non-coupled polymer residues in the final product. In the examples, a butadiene homopolymer or a butadiene-styrene random or block copolymer, obtained using n-butyl-lithium and optionally tetrahydrofuran, is coupled using methyl methacrylate.
