In a centrifugal governor comprising an idling spring 8 and a full-load spring 11 both located within a governor casing and adjustable from outside the casing, a retainer 10 for the spring 8 is mounted in a retainer 12 for the spring 11 and is adjustable therein to vary the load of the spring 8 by a member 15 which can be moved into operative engagement with the retainer from outside the casing. The governor comprises a drive gear 3 rotatably mounted in a casing wall 1 and carrying weights 5 having bell - cranks abutting the governor sleeve 6. The spring 8 is compressed between a retainer 9 and the retainer 10 which is threaded into the retainer 12 for the spring 11 whose other end abuts a retainer 13 adjustably screwed into a casing wall 2. The member 15 is axially slidable but not rotatable in guides 16 in the retainer 10, is urged by a spring 18 into engagement with a rotation-preventing catch 17 on the retainer and has a recess 19 engageable by a projection 25 in the inner end of an adjusting member 22 slidable in the retainer 13 and normally held in the position shown by a clamping screw 23. To adjust the idling spring 8, the clamping- screw 23 is loosened and the member 22 is moved until the projection 25 engages the recess 19 of the member 15 which is then pressed out of the catch 17. The member 22 is then turned by its square end 26 to rotate the member 15 and the retainer 10 in the required direction to the desired extent. The member 22 may be rigidly secured to the member 15.
