Abstract

<PICT:0894108/III/1> Carbon black is produced by burning hydrocarbon fuel in an annular combustion zone 17 surrounding a make hydrocarbon injection zone 28, the fuel being subjected during combustion to rapid change in direction by impingement against a defining wall of the combustion zone and being passed after substantially complete combustion to said injection zone from where it passes together with injected make hydrocarbon into an elongated carbon black-producing reaction zone 14. A burning mixture of fuel from line 21 and air from chamber 22 and line 23 issues from a plurality of, e.g. 6, burners 18, impinges against the wall 12 of the combustion zone, and then passes to the injection zone 28. Air passes through an annular passage 27 to prevent carbon deposition on the make hydrocarbon injection pipe 26. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the combustion and injection zones are formed by a thin disc-shaped chamber. In a further modification (Fig. 1, not shown) the burning fuel is injected radially into the combustion zone and impinges against an annular extension of the reaction zone. The reaction zone may have a constriction near its inlet (Fig. 1). The fuel may be natural gas or fuel oil. The burnt fuel may have a temperature of 1150 DEG -1500 DEG C. The make hydrocarbon may be a residual oil, an aromatic recycle oil, or an aromatic tar residue. It may be preheated to 650 DEG F., and may be injected as a cone having an inclined angle of 80 degrees. The resulting suspended carbon black may be cooled to 1,200 DEG F. by a water spray. Examples are given specifying rates of flow and pressures.
