Abstract
<PICT:0788195/III/1> Carbon black is produced by introducing a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon having a hydrogen/carbon ratio of 0.75-1.25 and a mean molecular weight of 125-550 at a rate of 29-31 gal/hrs. and under a pressure of at least 40 p.s.i.g. into a reaction chamber, no cross-sectional dimension of which is less than 27 in. and which is 10 ft. long, as a diverging spray having an included angle of at least 30 and burning the hydrocarbon with air in an amount sufficient for the combustion of 30-45 per cent of the hydrocarbon, all or most of the air being injected into the furnace as an annular stream around the spray source. To prevent coking at the hydrocarbon injector tip 1000-3000 cu. ft/hr. of air may be introduced around the tip. 6-12 per cent of the air may be introduced downstream of the point of introduction of the hydrocarbon. An air deflector may be provided in the main air stream and may be circular, conical or a plurality of spiral or longitudinal blades. The liquid may be a coal or petroleum tar and may be heated to 300-500 DEG F. As shown, hydrocarbon is introduced from injector 30 in a cylindrical throat 14 into a furnace 10 having a conical inlet wall 12 with a slope of 45 degrees. Air is supplied from a scroll-shaped header 18 to the cylindrical throat and supplementary air is introduced through jacket 32 and radical inlets 20 (Fig. 1, not shown). Instead of air a combustible mixture of air or oxygen and gas or oil may be introduced through inlets 20. Radial inlets 20 may be replaced by tangential inlets (Fig. 3, not shown). A refractory checkerbrick section (Fig. 3) may be provided after the auxiliary air inlets. Specification 699,406 is referred to.
