Abstract

Composite articles are obtained by irradiating fibres in the presence of a monomer containing a vinyl or vinylidene group whereby the monomer is polymerized, and incorporating the polymer modified fibres in a rubber composition and vulcanizing. The rubber may be natural or synthetic, e.g. butadiene copolymerized with either styrene, acrylonitrile or methyl iso propenyl ketone; polyolefines; polybutadienes; neoprene or polyisoprene. Specified monomers for polymerizing on to the fibres are butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, styrene, vinyl- and methyl vinyl-pyridine, acrylic acid methacrylic acid and alkyl acrylates and methacrylates. Two or more monomers may be used and there may be pressure radiation sensitive solvents, e.g. chloroform; and molecular weight regulators, e.g. mercaptans. Fibres specified include nylon, rayon and polyester fibres. To improve adhesion to the rubber an adhesive may be applied to the fibres.ALSO:Composite articles are obtained by irradiating fibres in the presence of a monomer containing a vinyl or vinylidine group, whereby the monomer is polymerized, and incorporating the polymer modified fibres in a rubber composition and vulcanizing. Monomers specified for polymerizing on to the fibres are butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, styrene, vinyl- and methyl vinylpyridine, acrylic and methacrylic acid, and alkyl acrylates and methacrylates. Two or more monomers may be used and there may be present radiation-sensitive solvents, e.g. chloroform; and molecular weight regulators, e.g. mercaptans. Fibres specified include nylon, rayon and polyester fibres.
