Abstract

Conjugated aliphatic dienes are separated from mono-olefinic compounds by contacting a liquid mixture containing them with diborane, which reacts selectively with the mono-olefinic compound, and separating the diene from the organoborane formed. Separation may be effected by distillation, if desired the organoborane being oxidised to form organiborate esters and possibly also hydrolysed to the corresponding alcohols. The unsaturated compounds may be hydrocarbons or substituted with groups not attacked by the diborane, e.g. nitro, halo, ether oxygen, acid chloride or carboxylic acid ester groups, and may contain up to 30 carbon atoms. The reaction may be effected at -30 DEG C. to 150 DEG C. at 1-50 atmospheres using 0.25-1.25 equivalent of diborane based on mono-olefine (1 mole diborane is equivalent to 6 moles of mono-olefine). The diborane may be formed in situ. Preferably an open chain or cyclic, saturated ether is present in small amounts or as a diluent, e.g. tetrahydrofuran or the dimethyl or methyl ethyl ether of diethylene glycol; other diluents may be used, e.g. paraffinic or aromatic hydrocarbons or their nitro- or halogeno-derivatives, thioethers, and tertiary amines.
