Abstract

893,262. Hydro-pneumatic spring-units. EATON AXLES Ltd. Oct. 8, 1959 [Oct. 14, 1958], No. 32760/58. Class 108(3). In a hydro-pneumatic suspension system for a vehicle, a damping valve 21 controlling the flow of fluid from a ram and cylinder reaction unit 2, 6 to a hydraulic accumulator chamber 22 has its effective orifice varied by the pressure in the accumulator system so that the degree of damping is increased with the vehicle mass. In one example a poppet valve 25 is urged away from its seating 24 by a tension spring 27 and is controllably urged towards the seating by pressure in a chamber 35 formed in a guide spider 26 and connected through a bore 28 to the accumulator chamber. The opposite force of the valve is open to low pressure in the hydraulic reservoir through a pipe 31 and cylinder guideway 29. A high pressure may be applied to the valve through a pipeline 32 to reduce the gap to a minimum, a non-return valve 33 being provided in the passage 28 to prevent the escape of high pressure fluid to the accumulator.
