Abstract

A free-flowing dry powder comprising a silicone anti-foaming agent encapsulated in a water-soluble film-forming material, may be made by spray drying an aqueous emuslion of a diorganopolysiloxane, filler and water-soluble film-forming material. The encapsulating agent can be used in amount of from 1 part (by weight) of agent per 30 pts. of siloxane to 100 pts. of agent per part of siloxane. Ingredients specified are: dimethyl- and diethyl-polysiloxanes; encapsulating agents-methyl cellulose, starch, gelatin, albumen, gum acacia, gum tragacanth, locust bean gum, Irish moss, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol and guar gum; fillers-silica aerogels. Additional ingredients are bacteria inhibitors, e.g. sorbic acid, surfactants, carbamates to aid in disintegrating the powder in the system to be defoamed, and colouring agents. Specifications 639,673, 689,506 and 859,329 are referred to.ALSO:A free-flowing dry powder comprising a silicone antifoaming agent encapsulated in a watersoluble film-forming material, may be made by spray drying an aqueous emulsion of a diorganopolysiloxane, filler and water-soluble filmforming material. The encapsulating agent can be used in amount of from 1 part (by weight) of agent per 30 parts of siloxane to 100 parts of agent per part of xiloxane. Ingredients specified are: dimethyl- and diethyl-polysiloxanes; encapsulating agents-methyl cellulose, starch, gelatin, albumen, gum acacia, gum tragacanth, locust bean gum, Irish moss, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol and guar gum; fillers-silica aerogels. Additional ingredients are bacteria inhibitors, e.g. sorbic acid, surfactants, carbamates to aid in disintegrating the powder in the system to be defoamed, and colouring agents. In a typical Example (1) an aqueous emulsion of a dimethylsiloxane gum, fume silica, methyl cellulose and sorbic acid, was spray dried (by spraying in to the top of a heated column with a counter-current of heated air) to yield a fine, freeflowing dry powder. Specifications 639,673, 689,506 and 859,329 are referred to.
