Abstract

892,780. Exhaust - silencers. MORRIS MOTORS Ltd. Oct. 24, 1960 [Dec. 11, 1959], No. 42143/59. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXII] An exhaust silencer A for an I.C. engine is made in the form of an open-ended shell into which the core assembly E, D, G is inserted before the ends of the shell are reduced to enable the front and rear exhaust pipes L. M to be attached by welding. The shell may be made from a single-ply sheet, or a multi-ply sheet consisting of two sheets of metal spotwelded together with or without an intervening sheet of asbestos. A lock-seam crimped at C and spot-welded at the ends extends the length of the shell, in which the perforated core-tubes E, D, spot-welded together at F, are inserted. A baffle G is spot-welded to the shell and to the tube E. The ends of the shell are reduced by folds or webs J spot-welded at K. The webs may be cropped or planished into the ends of the silencer.
