Abstract

The silencer (1) for a road vehicle has an outer shell of elliptical cross-section. The dimensions of the axes of the ellipse change progressively from one end (3) of the shell to the other end (4) although the perimeter remains constant. Elliptical end caps (5, 6) are made to suit the ends (3, 4) respectively. The silencer shell can be easily manufactured from a rectangular sheet of steel with opposite edges welded together along a longitudinal line (2). Inlet and outlet pipes (8) are attached to the end caps. This shape of silencer is easier to install when space may be restricted by the design of the vehicle.
