The angular position of a shaft is converted into a corresponding combination of in-phase and out-of-phase A.C. signals on a plurality of leads by means of a dynamo-electric device, Fig. 1, comprising a ten-pole stator S and a fourpole rotor R, poles P 1 , P 2 being perpendicular to poles P 3 , P 4 . The rotor carries a main winding W 1 and an auxiliary winding W 2 which are so arranged that the resultant field so produced is inclined to the line P 1 , P 2 by 9 degrees, either leading or lagging in depend. ence upon the polarity of the auxiliary winding- The position of the resultant field, and therefore of the rotor, is sensed by a coded pattern of stator windings which provide outputs in accordance with the table of Fig. 2 (not shown). When several devices as shown in Fig. 1 are geared together backlash errors can be minimized by using the leading or lagging field in an analogous way to lead and lag brushes.
